Significant Changes To Virginia’s Landlord Tenant Laws
On February 27, 2019, the Governor approved a number of changes to the eviction process which will become effective July 1, 2019. The most significant changes to be aware of are:
*Change in language from “writ of possession” to “writ of eviction”
*Reduction in time to seek a writ of execution from 1 year after order of possession by court to 180 days from the order
*A writ of eviction expires if not served and executed within 30 days
*Any new rental agreement between landlord and tenant after the order of possession by the Court will automatically void the Order of possession
